About Me:
Hi, I am a person who has paddled since I was old enough to sneak out the familes canoe. I have just turned 48 and still paddle whenever I can. I went back to school and will be getting my degree in Child and Youth Care this spring. Being a student has given me the oppertunity to spend the last four summers paddling. Last year I spent a month on Georgia Straight, then a few days in Oregon before starting my real trip from Sundrie Alberta to York Factory. I am primarally a soloist, but I do enjoy the odd group paddle. The year befor last I have paddled from Willoston Lake to the Arctic Ocean, and before that the Athabaska (Lake and River), the Yukon River Quest, etc.
What boats do you paddle?
My own design, dagger phantom, dagger caption
Paddle brands:
carbon fiber Zeveral bent shaft, straight shaft werner
Gear brands:
whatever works. I am decidedly low-tech

Not long now Andy and the ice is dissappering at a good rate. Lots of huge ice pans in the bay blowing around, but at the rate we are warming up they will be taking a beating.

I have been busy with the poster stuff for the upcoming Reel Paddling film Festival. We have that on April 5th but I like to get signage upa s soon as I can. Folks in Yellowknife seem to buy their tickets at the very last moment. Then they wonder why its sold out, happens every year especially with the Banff Mountian festival.

Sounds like we have more cooler temperatures coming my way for the week end. At least we are into Feburary and that is closer to spring than when we started the good sledding weather in November.
Keep your eyes on the news in March, yellowknife is holding the Second Annual Rock and Ice extreme marathon race. I good turn out last year and promising again this year folks are already signing up.

Sounds like a good trip all right a long trip. Anyway sorry that The Pikes portage stuff was more map than anyything else. The Hanbury river is the standard route and is done each year by a couple of groups usually. You could check with Terry Elliot the new owner of Canadian eco ventures they have a lodge on Whitefish Lake and cater Thelon trips. Terry is a kayak guide as well Greg

Hi Greg, I looked through the maps and have gotten my tenative route figured out. It was funny but if you type in Pikes portage route you do not get much information on the portage. My tenative route now goes down the Hanvury and thelon rivers, and then up the Kazan, down the Little Partyridge, accross Reindeer Lake, and down the Churchill River to end in Churchill. I have an out at Baker Lake, Wolleston Lake, or Lynn Lake. Wolleston or Lynn Lakes do not require flights out, and so I am pretty well covered. I know that sounds ambitious, but I have paddled up the Winnipeg River amongst others, so I do have some idea of what I am getting myself into. It will be interesting to see how it goes. If you are around then I will say hi when I get to Yellowknife in the spring.

Yes Andrew That is the Lund on the Sunshine coast to Skagway across the Chilkoot to Dawson city. The rterek over the CVhilkoot is a bit of a portage I must admit 33 mles to Bennett Lake but I would only have to go as far as Linderman Lake say 25 miles. I hiked the trail in 1987 and it is a good trail. I could always get friends from Whitehorse to pick me up and drop me off on the road as there is a hike in trail that is five miles long takes you to Bennett. We shall see when the time comes, Greg Flying fromBaker works but it depends on your boat size as the planes aren't as big as down south. I had to wait two weeks for the right cargo configuration so they could fly my kayak from Inuvik after the Mackenzie River trip. Folding canoes work well and we rented out to some folks that did both the Thelon and Coppermine rivers. I know the Coppermine has also been done by inflatables. Greg
