About Me:
I'm and active sea kayak paddler with limited white water skills and a beginning canoeist. I have been paddling about 14 years on Great Slave Lake. I live in Yellowknife, NWT, Canada where I run the Paddlers for Parts Association. We are a group of paddlers, cyclist and hikers that promote organ and tissue donation. Longest paddle 21 days Mackenzie River NWT, Canada, Ft.Providence to Inuvik. I have crossed Canada north to south by kayak and bicycle taking a total of 34 days to do this over two summers. This summer is either a series of small trips or a long one. I hope to complete the final 1,000 mile journey of the Paddlers orginal goal within two years. New trips keep getting in the way and my back at the moment is preventing the hike. I want to walk at least 1,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail which would complete the Paddlers original goal. All other trips are a bonus and the funds raised well used but the hike is very important to me.

New Years Eve free swim

I have received the final count from the pool staff and am quite pleased with it. One hundred and seventy-four folks decided to join us at the pool. Fun was had by all and we even received a free feed of Pizza compliments of Papa Jims Pizzas. This was a very generous touch and went down very well. We managed to give out a few donor cards and raised awareness of Organ and Tissue Donation . The Paddlers for Parts consider the final event of the year to be a huge success. The paddlers have just sen… Continue

New Years Eve free swim

Running the Paddlers for Parts Association can keep a guy fairly busy and we think it is worth the effort. Last evening we held our 8th Annual New years swim and it was a great success. I have yet to recieve the total head count but I will get it over the next couple of days. We have roughly 80 signatures in the guest book and there were lots of folks to shy to sign.
The event as a whole went very well and we managed to handout quite a few Organ / Tissue donor cards and we feel that one signed d… Continue

Winter time in Yellowknife

I am sure you can imagine that winter in Yellowknife really limits our paddling season. There are pleny of ways to keep bus and many a folk spentd lots of time outdoors. Yellowknife has a huge population of runners that go all year round and we see more bikes on the road during the winter now. The Triathlete club keeps their members hoppping with pool sessions and running. Being a large relatively flat area cross counrty skiing is very big here as well. The northern lights come out to play most… Continue

Leg Four Clipper around the world.

Sometime during the wee hours of this morning I crossed the finishing buoy in the fourth leg of the Clipper around the World Virtual race. I sailed 5,100 nautical miles in 22 days, 23 hours and 18 minutes from Cape Town, South Africa to Geraldton, Western Australia, finishing 8,454 out of almost 70,000 virtual racers. Not bad for a beginner. There are 11 legs left to race in this one and I an in the last quater of the Jules Verne record attempt. Considering it is a record attempt I could use a l… Continue

Geminid Meteor shower

I have just come back in from meteor watching. Last evening around 10 ET the Gemined shower was peaking and there was a chance of seeing 140 meteors per hour. Minus 30+C is a little colder for such a stationary activity and I got out late but managed to see 6 shooting stars. First day of winter is approaching fast considering we have been at almost -40 C for the last three or four days. This means boating season here is about 4/5 months away yet but that is much better than 6/7 months away. Look… Continue

Virtually ashore and whopping things up in Rio

Virtual racing around the globe in open 60/70's is a great way to while the winter months away. I am however glad that leg 2 of the Clipper is over as it was beginninhg to drag.Wwith the loss of the trades due to a tropical derpession and 4/5 days of struggling just to hold your place (I failed and lost12,000) and then the headwinds for the last 30 hours really sucked. I did however mangae to sail back all my lost positions and finished very close to my beat position during the race. I came in 8… Continue

Clipper around the world

Sailing in my third virtual around the globe race and doing well. I have place in the top 10 or better precent in the previous races and am doing well in the third. At the moment I am 212 nautical miles from Rio De Janeiro our next port of call. I seem to be doing very well in the last half day and will stay at it to see how far up I can get in the fleet.
Not as nice as paddling but alot warmer. Cheers, Greg

Jack Frost arrived last evening

I walk around the Frame lake trail every day and was surprised yesterday when I saw Frame lake. The day before she was open water and yesterday afternoon a sheet of (very thin) ice. Now the small lakes will freeze quickly as the temperature dips but the ice will not be safe of people for awhile yet. The weather is cold enough to freeze but not cold enough for building good ice. Like fine wine, good ice takes time. Time to start packing the throw bag and ice picks on my daily walks. |some folks j… Continue

World rivers day was simply grand.

Yes there were not a lot of us there at any one point but the weather was dry and warm and we had fun. Most of the food was eaten (I'll finish the rest) and we had half the boats in the water at any given time. The bonfire was great and we left a large supply of wood for the next group of folks. Lorna took her first kayak ride and by the end of the day had paddle two boats for a total of 8 trips and about 2 hours of solid paddling. She also had a hoot attempting the slack line. Many thanks to Tr… Continue

World Rivers Day

This time tomorrow should find us at the Yellowknife River bridge and celebrating World Rivers day at one of our favourite spots. The rain we are getting now promisies to be snow tomorrow and that is bringing our paddling season to a halt pretty fast. Today we are a whopping +7C and tomorrows high is predicted at +2C which is fine as long as it isn't raining. I will wait until later to decide about buying the grub as poor weather will mean a poor turnout and I hate to see the food wasted.

Greg,
The boat came that way. It's a 1970's Old Town down river boat made when paisley was the craze. The boat in the picture isn't mine so it's not unique. I'm sure you have lots of winter stuff to do there, but I paddled for the 1st time in a month this morning. 28 and most of the ice is gone.

I just let you know out of interest. Klepper America has been selling them for some time. Klepper are going to compete with themselves as they have sold a down wind rig for a few years which works well except it can,t be lowered if rigged their way and if sailing downwind and then paddle back the sail is aloft to catch the wind, someone in the front seat could reef it, but if sailing from the back there can be problems

Thanks Greg, Gerald Grace of Klepper America has just told me that Klepper in Germany are going to sell the Pacific Action sail with the mount he came up with which clamps with a special screw through the hole that the Klepper mast goes through in the front of the coaming I don,t know if this is general news yet but know doubt it soon will be.

T hebottom fell out of the weather here in Yellowknife, our first really cool day. At the moment we are minus 34C and dropping. Lets hope the cool snap is a short one. We get much copldder here but this is plenty as far as I am concerned. On the plus side the sun is out and shinning brightly and in only11 more days the days begin to lenghten. As long as the winds stay down the weather is fine but the smallest wind really increases the wind chill factor.

Yeah - 70's paisley. Also great that you are involved with Paddlers for Parts Association. I personally know the importance of that. Still able to paddle the rivers here but the ice is creeping in.

Baja was beautiful. Winds were calm - until the last day. We paddled back to the mainland Friday afternoon instead of Saturday because of the forecast - very strong el Norte. And the forecast was right - we would have been stuck on Isla Danzante and we all had planes to catch on Sunday.

Hi Greg - that was fast! I just finished uploading! A dreary November day here, so I thought I'd add some cheery kayak photos. Baja in February, BC (Quadra Island) in April, Georgian Bay in July, Nootka BC in Aug and Nov in Toronto.
Hope all is well with you.

Sorry about your temp,s i suppose it keeps the mossies in check, here we are still having days above freezing with dull cloud laden skies, most unusual. And don,t get sea sick on the "next leg".
